On 20–21 September 2025, Atira Ruthenia took part in Tolkien Day, a festival for fans of Tolkien's world organised by the All Mor community at SKVO Space in Hydropark, Kyiv.
History behind the fantasy
Tolkien drew on the languages, legends and material culture of medieval Europe. At the festival we showed that real world: the arms, armour and clothing of the European Middle Ages, reconstructed from historical sources by a club that recreates the Ukrainian Middle Ages.
What visitors found in our area
- Open duels at the lists, where visitors could watch and try historical fencing;
- an exhibition of medieval arms and armour;
- photos with the team and conversations about how people actually lived, dressed and fought in the Middle Ages.
Fantasy festivals bring many people to history who would not come to a lecture. For us they are a chance to show that the real Middle Ages are just as interesting as the invented ones.
